Torys is pleased to announce that partner John Tobin has been named the 2025 recipient of the OBA Award of Excellence in Taxation Law.
Presented by the Ontario Bar Association, the award recognizes exceptional contributions and achievements by an Ontario Bar Association member in the area of taxation law.
John is one of Canada’s leading tax lawyers, providing creative and skilled counsel to some of Canada’s largest businesses and financial institutions. A partner in Torys’ tax group since 2002, John’s vast experience covers a range of tax matters, including tax structuring, international transactions, transfer pricing, tax controversy, corporate finance, derivatives, securitization and mergers and acquisitions. With an extensive legal career that spans more than 35 years, John has been celebrated countless times by the legal community, including being recognized as a top tax lawyer in publications such as Chambers Canada, Chambers Global, World Tax, Best Lawyers in Canada, and Lexpert.
John’s contributions to tax law, the legal profession, and Canada’s business community are significant. He was a member of the OBA Tax Committee for 14 years and held the position of vice chair in 2013. He has also been a member of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada Tax Committee for 20 years, and a member of the International Fiscal Association Executive Board for eight years.
Known for his deep commitment to educating and giving back to the next generation of tax lawyers, John is co-director of Osgoode Hall Law School’s Professional LLM in Taxation Law and has taught on international tax, tax law and policy, tax of environmental law, and corporate reorganizations at both Osgoode and the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. His mentorship and leadership will have lasting impacts on law students and earl-career lawyers for years to come.
This award is a true testament to John’s outstanding leadership, achievements and contributions to taxation law in Canada. Congratulations, John!
